Check out this fun twist on a classic cocktail: the Oaxaca Old Fashioned! The Oaxaca Old Fashioned is a modern classic recipe from Phil Ward of Death & Company. It represents the first steps of the mezcal obsession that began in the late aughts and owes much of its instigation to Ron Cooper’s importation and promotion of Del Maguey Vida. I used the Código Rosa, which is technically a rested blanco rather than a reposado. It spends a month in Napa Valley Cabernet barrels.

What You Need:

Recipe:

Oaxaca Old Fashioned

  • 1.5 oz. Reposado tequila (opted for the rested blanco Código Rosa)
  • 0.5 oz. Mezcal (used Del Maguey Puebla, but any good quality mezcal can work)
  • 1 barspoon agave nectar
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters

Stir with ice and strain over fresh ice in chilled double old fashioned glass. Optional garnish with flamed orange coin.
